Google Glass visits Bethel Park Soccer & Coaching possibilities for Glass

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to take my Google Glass to the Bethel Park 5th/6th grade soccer game at Neil Armstrong Middle School.  Like many places I go, people are interested in finding out more about Google Glass and the features.  I was able to take some photos by blinking my eye and recording video with just a tap to the glasses.

As I was there, I was thinking about all of the possibilities of training with this technology.  A coach could wear the Google Glass and record tutorials without using their hands and upload them.  A coach could also record a game with audio and use it as a way to reflect upon what they saw from the sidelines and show it to the players as a development tool.

Warning Google Glass iphone data costs may make you consider an Android Phone

I was so excited to get my Google Glass and get started.  I watched so many of the exciting videos on the internet.  After opening the sleek box, I was ready.  Unfortunately,  I had an iphone 5.  Although it can work with the iPhone,  it requires a hotspot to stay connected when wifi is not available.  After discovering the recurring monthly fee and potential for going over the data included in the monthly fee, I determined this extra cost was not in my budget.  My only option was to change phones to an Android device.   There is an app for the android phones that does not require a hotspot!  So, I had to give up my iphone 5 and now have the Samsung 5S that was released today.  After setting up my new phone, I was able to get the My Glass app and pair up the Google Glass with my phone.  Let the Google Glass adventures begin!!

Google Glass is here - let the adventures in higher education technology transformation begin!

Google Glass is an amazing technology device that allows an individual to take photos, videos, search the Internet, and access countless applications without using their hands.  It is only currently available through the "Explorer" program where individuals can complete an application for the opportunity to be selected to purchase the device. On April 15th Google allowed the general public to purchase the Glass while quantities lasted.  Google also opened the opportunity to a limited amount of companies that wanted to purchase several devices.  Everyone purchasing the device knows that it is on the beta testing phase.  The price is $1,500 plus tax.

As a professor, I look forward to all of the possibilities that this technology can be used for in higher education.  I look forward to posting my experiences!  Let the Google Glass higher education transformation adventures begin.
